Spathian to Aegean (upper Lower Triassic to lower Middle Triassic) carbon isotope stratigraphy constrained by the conodont biostratigraphy of carbonates on top of a mid‐oceanic seamount formed in the Panthalassic Ocean

Abstract The Taho Formation in western Shikoku Island, Japan, consists of Triassic carbonates that formed on a seamount the Panthalassic Ocean. In order to investigate stratigraphy and paleoceanography this carbonate succession, we analyzed biostratigraphy chemostratigraphy 17.6 m‐thick section upper at stratotype area Tahokamigumi, Seiyo City. This comprises bioclastic limestone containing bivalves, ammonoids, conodonts. We recognized six conodont zones (in ascending order): Novispathodus pingdingshanensis , brevissimus Triassospathodus symmetricus homeri Chiosella timorensis Magnigondolella cf. alexanderi zones. Thus, studied succession is latest Smithian Aegean age. A δ 13 C profile shows elevated values during lowest Spathian followed by gradual negative excursion, subsequent positive excursion near Spathian–Aegean boundary, relatively constant Aegean. characteristic series excursions correlates with other records for period, including peak Smithian–lowest (P3), lower middle (N4), Spathian–lowest (P4). represents new high‐resolution record Ocean, which ages are constrained biostratigraphy. exhibits consistent offset ~2 ‰ as compared those from regions (i.e., mostly Tethyan Ocean). can be explained preferential removal 12 seawater photosynthesis calcification marine organisms over platform, and/or high dissolved inorganic carbon Ocean due less influence C‐enriched terrestrial waters organic production/burial more restricted
