Southern Ocean sea ice concentration budgets of five ocean-sea ice reanalyses

چکیده
Abstract In this study, sea ice concentration (SIC) budgets were calculated for five ocean-sea reanalyses (CFSR, C-GLORSv7, GLORYS12v1, NEMO-EnKF and ORAS5), in the Southern Ocean compared with observations. Benefiting from assimilation of SIC, reanalysis products display a realistic representation extent as well area. However, when applying SIC budget diagnostics to decompose changes into contributions advection, divergence, thermodynamics, deformation data assimilation, we find that both atmospheric oceanic forcings model configurations are significant contributors on differences. For CFSR, primary source deviation other is stronger northward component velocity, which results advection divergence. Anomalous surface currents CFSR proposed be main cause velocity anomaly. Furthermore, twice mean thickness makes it more susceptible wind stresses under Coriolis forces, exacerbating drift ice. The GLORYS12v1 have some underestimation contribution divergence autumn, winter spring observations, but reasonable summer. ORAS5, although using same coupled forcing C-GLORSv7 has these two reanalyses. suggest future should focus improving modelling velocities, example through

Thermohaline stratification below the Southern Ocean sea ice
The end of winter stratification within the cold cyclonic trough of the Weddell gyre near 60øS between 5øE and the Greenwich meridian is resolved with the Mikhail Somov data set. The temperature maximum of the Weddell Deep Water (WDW) is, for the most part, less than 0.5øC, but warmer cells of WDW are found. These warm WDW cells have temperature, salinity, and oxygen properties similar to the W...

[1] Estimates of 20th Century sea level rise are typically 1.5 to 2 mm/y, with a steric contribution of (0.5 ± 0.2) mm/y. Estimates of the eustatic contribution vary widely between 1.1 and +1.3 mm/y. We attempt an independent estimate of eustatic sea level rise based on the measured freshening of the global ocean, and with attention to the contribution from melting of sea ice (which affects fre...
متن کاملThe Impact of Southern Ocean Sea Ice in a Global Ocean Model
Most of the Southern Ocean (SO) is marginally stably stratified and thus prone to enhanced convection and possibly bottom-water formation whenever the upper ocean is cooled or made more saline by ice formation. Sea ice modifies the heat and freshwater fluxes, which in turn constitute a critical surface condition in this sensitive region of intense vertical exchange. The authors investigate the ...
متن کاملImproving Multiyear Sea Ice Concentration Estimates with Sea Ice Drift
Multiyear ice (MYI) concentration can be retrieved from passive or active microwave remote sensing observations. One of the algorithms that combines both observations is the Environmental Canada Ice Concentration Extractor (ECICE). However, factors such as ridging, snow wetness and metamorphism can cause significant changes in brightness temperature and backscatter, leading to misidentification...
متن کاملThe influence of ocean flow on newly forming sea ice
[1] The heat and mass balance of the Arctic Ocean is very sensitive to the growth and decay of sea ice and the interaction between the heat and salt fields in the oceanic boundary layer. The hydraulic roughne ss of sea ice controls the detailed natur e of turbulent fluxe s in the boundar y layer and hence is an important ingredient in model parameterizations. We describe a novel mechanism for t...
