Sources of stream base flow in blanket peat covered catchments

چکیده
A two year hydrological characterisation programme of relatively intact blanket peat-covered catchments, underlain by geochemically distinct substrates, investigated the influence sub-peat materials on runoff regimes first order and second streams draining them. Semi-continuous monitoring flow water quality revealed a strong inverse relationship between stream rates specific electrical conductance (SEC), with chemistries during storm proving comparable in all three catchments. By contrast, differences catchments became more pronounced at lower flow, where increased ion concentrations reflected reactions peat substrate materials. Water table sites groundwater levels to vary less than 0.6 m over investigation period. Findings suggest consists near constant inputs higher discharge, mixing variable proportions mineralised compositionally bog water. Although making up 5% total runoff, contribution waters plays an important role maintaining particularly prolonged dry periods, may help explain aquatic biodiversity encountered covered areas.

Runoff production in blanket peat covered catchments
[1] Blanket peat catchments exhibit flashy regimes, but little is known about the exact nature of runoff production processes within these catchments. Catchment, hillslope, and plot-scale monitoring results are presented from the blanket peats of the northern Pennines, United Kingdom. Catchment efficiency for three study catchments with areas of 11.4 km, 0.83 km, and 0.44 km were 72%, 77%, and ...
متن کاملInfiltration, runoff and sediment production in blanket peat catchments: implications of field rainfall simulation experiments
Blanket peat covers the headwaters of many major European rivers. Runoff production in upland blanket peat catchments is flashy with large flood peaks and short lag times; there is minimal baseflow. Little is known about the exact processes of infiltration and runoff generation within these upland headwaters. This paper presents results from a set of rainfall simulation experiments performed on...
متن کاملDoes stream flow structure woody riparian vegetation in subtropical catchments?
The primary objective of this study was to test the relevance of hydrological classification and class differences to the characteristics of woody riparian vegetation in a subtropical landscape in Queensland, Australia. We followed classification procedures of the environmental flow framework ELOHA - Ecological Limits of Hydrologic Alteration. Riparian surveys at 44 sites distributed across fiv...
متن کاملControls of soil pipe frequency in upland blanket peat
[1] Soil pipes were surveyed in 160 British blanket peat catchments using consistent application of ground-penetrating radar. Soil pipes were found in all catchments. The mean frequency of piping was 69 per kilometer of surveyed transect. Land management (moorland gripping) appears to exert the most important control on hillslope pipe frequency in blanket peats. Management practice in peatlands...
متن کاملDetermination of the Best Hierarchical Clustering Method for Regional Analysis of Base Flow Index in Kerman Province Catchments
The lack of complete coverage of hydrological data forces hydrologists to use the homogenization methods in regional analysis. In this research, in order to choose the best Hierarchical clustering method for regional analysis, base flow and related index were extracted from daily stream flow data using two parameter recursive digital filters in 43 hydrometric stations of the Kerman province. Ph...
