Sources and sinks of methane in sea ice

چکیده

We report on methane (CH4) stable isotope (?13C and ?2H) measurements from landfast sea ice collected near Barrow (Utqiagvik, Alaska) Cape Evans (Antarctica) over the winter-to-spring transition. These provide novel insights into pathways of CH4 production consumption in ice. found substantial differences between two sites. Sea overlying shallow shelf was supersaturated with a clear microbial origin, most likely methanogenesis sediments. estimated that situ oxidation consumed fraction being supplied to ice, partly explaining large range isotopic values observed –68.5 –48.5 ‰ ?2H –246 –104 ‰). at also but surprisingly high ?13C (between –46.9 –13.0 ‰), whereas –313 –113 ‰) were those Barrow. are first composition Antarctic Our data set suggests potential combination hydrothermal source, vicinity Mount Erebus, aerobic formation although metabolic pathway for latter still needs be elucidated. observations show considered as an active biogeochemical interface, contributing consumption, which disputes standing paradigm is inert barrier passively accumulating ocean-atmosphere boundary.

Variations in global methane sources and sinks during 1910 – 2010

Atmospheric methane (CH4) increased from ∼900 ppb (parts per billion, or nanomoles per mole of dry air) in 1900 to ∼1800 ppb in 2010 at a rate unprecedented in any observational records. However, the contributions of the various methane sources and sinks to the CH4 increase are poorly understood. Here we use initial emissions from bottom-up inventories for anthropogenic sources, emissions from ...

Inverse modeling of methane sources and sinks using the adjoint of a global transport model

An inverse modeling method is presented to evaluate the sources and sinks of atmospheric methane. An adjoint version of a global transport model has been used to estimate these fluxes at a relatively high spatial and temporal resolution. Measurements from 34 monitoring stations and 11 locations along two ship cruises by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration have been used as...

Sources of multi-decadal variability in Arctic sea ice extent

The observed dramatic decrease in September sea ice extent (SIE) has been widely discussed in the scientific literature. Though there is qualitative agreement between observations and ensemble members of the Third Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP3), it is concerning that the observed trend (1979–2010) is not captured by any ensemble member. The potential sources of this discrepancy i...

Methane distribution, sources, and sinks in an aquaculture bay (Sanggou Bay, China)

From 2012 to 2015, we investigated methane (CH4) distribution, air−sea fluxes, and sediment−water fluxes in an aquaculture bay (Sanggou Bay, China), and estimated the input of CH4 from potential land sources including rivers and groundwater. Surface water CH4 in the bay ranged from 3.0 to 302 nM, while bottom CH4 was usually higher due to sediment release. Water column CH4 in summer and autumn ...

Radionuclides in Arctic sea ice: Tracers of sources, fates and ice transit time scales

Arctic sea ice can incorporate sediment and associated chemical species during its formation in shallow shelf environments and can also intercept atmospherically transported material during transit. Release of this material in ice ablation areas (e.g. the Fram Strait) enhances fluxes of both sediments and associated species in such areas. We have used a suite of natural (Be, Pb) and anthropogen...
