Source depth discrimination using peak migration line of cross-correlation output in shallow water having negative thermocline

In this paper, the peak migration line of cross-correlation output is utilized to discriminate depth an underwater acoustic source in shallow water environment with a negative thermocline through studying modal arrival structure at different depths. The discrimination can be done according position when delay zero since type dominant normal mode determined by source. Firstly, using beam vertical linear array and received signal single element do processing, two-dimensional intensity image versus elevation angle obtained. Then, peaks domain delays extracted from image. achieved piecewise fitting which divided into two parts corresponding being less than or equal more zero, respectively. Finally, curve where time zero. Theoretical analysis shows that little influenced sound velocity profile (SVP) varying depth, threshold lower-order modes, identification region thickness higher strength instrumental distinguishing. numerical results experimental prove method's effectiveness implemented without SVP details separation, movement.
