Solid-State Electrochemistry and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: Status and Future Prospects

Abstract Solid-state electrochemistry (SSE) is an interdisciplinary field bridging and solid-state ionics deals primarily with the properties of solids that conduct ions in case ionic conducting solid electrolytes electrons and/or electron holes mixed electronic materials. However, devices such as oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), there are unique electrochemical features due to high operating temperature (600–1 000 °C) electrodes. The solid-to-solid contact at electrode/electrolyte interface one most distinguished SOFCs fundamental reasons for occurance importance phenomena shift equipotential lines, constriction effect, polarization-induced formation, etc. SOFCs. restriction placing reference electrode electrolyte further complicates SSE In addition, migration species oxygen ions, while liquid system, electrons. increased knowledge understanding have guided development SOFC technologies last 30–40 years, but thus far, no up-to-date reviews on this important topic appeared. purpose current article review update progress achievements SOFCs, largely based author’s past few decades research field, serve introduction basics Graphical abstract
