Solar Geoengineering: The View from Just War/Securitization Theories

چکیده
Abstract As the world continues to fail reduce and control global surface temperatures, use of solar radiation management (SRM) technology by one actor or a small coalition actors is becoming increasingly likely. Yet, most social scientific literature on geoengineering does not tend systematically engage with this possibility; scholars focus either governance banning SRM usage research altogether. On margins debate, handful researchers have sought bring insights from just war tradition issue unilateral minilateral usage. This article concerned contribution war/securitization theories can make our understanding debate surrounding climate engineering. It scrutinizes deepens existing attempts examine moral permissibility usage, including perspective Just Securitization Theory.

Stratospheric solar geoengineering without ozone loss.
Injecting sulfate aerosol into the stratosphere, the most frequently analyzed proposal for solar geoengineering, may reduce some climate risks, but it would also entail new risks, including ozone loss and heating of the lower tropical stratosphere, which, in turn, would increase water vapor concentration causing additional ozone loss and surface warming. We propose a method for stratospheric ae...
متن کاملOn solar geoengineering and climate uncertainty
Uncertain climate system response has been raised as a concern regarding solar geoengineering. We explore the effects of geoengineering on one source of climate system uncertainty by evaluating the intermodel spread across 12 climate models participating in the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison project. The model spread in simulations of climate change and the model spread in the response to...
متن کاملDynamic climate emulators for solar geoengineering
Climate emulators trained on existing simulations can be used to project project the climate effects that result from different possible future pathways of anthropogenic forcing, without further relying on general circulation model (GCM) simulations. We extend this idea to include different amounts of solar geoengineering in addition to different pathways of greenhouse gas concentrations, by tr...
متن کاملTowards legitimacy of the solar geoengineering research enterprise.
Mounting evidence that even aggressive reductions in net emissions of greenhouse gases will be insufficient to limit global climate risks is increasing calls for atmospheric experiments to better understand the risks and implications of also deploying solar geoengineering technologies to reflect sunlight and rapidly lower surface temperatures. But solar geoengineering research itself poses sign...
متن کاملSolar geoengineering to limit the rate of temperature change Douglas
Solar geoengineering has been suggested as a tool that might reduce damage from anthropogenic climate change. Analysis often assumes that geoengineering would be used to maintain a constant global mean temperature. Under this scenario, geoengineering would be required either indefinitely (on societal time scales) or until atmospheric CO2 concentrations were sufficiently reduced. Impacts of clim...
