Solar distillation of impure water from four different water sources under the southwestern Nigerian climate

Abstract. The enormous problems caused by the scarcity of potable water and transmission waterborne diseases such as cholera, dracunculiasis, hepatitis, typhoid filariasis in some parts Nigeria have created a public health concern. Every day thousands lives are lost due to contact with diseases. insufficient medical resources available developing countries deployed towards treatment that can easily be avoided if made available. This study seeks investigate purification four different samples (namely from flowing rivers, freshly dug well or groundwater, rainwater rooftops heavily polluted dirty water) consumed people local community using solar desalination method. A single basin still was constructed, experimental studies were carried out determine influence insolation temperature variations on yield distillate for both passive active stills tested. quality tested measuring total dissolved solid (TDS) electrical conductivity (EC) later comparing it World Health Organization (WHO) standard drinkable water. values obtained after fall within acceptable/tolerable range TDS EC, accordance WHO analysis provides an indigenous distillation method enhance production at low cost.
