Soil Seed Banks of Dry Tropical Forests under Different Land Management

چکیده

The objectives of this study were to evaluate woody-species composition and seed density in the soil bank (SSB) a dry subtropical forest with different disturbance regimes assess role leaf litter as reservoir disturbed forests. Study area: western Argentine Chaco region. Climate is seasonal semiarid, fire season coincides cool periods. In first step, we evaluated species soils forests four combinations disturbances (wildfires, livestock, roller-chopping, logging) using systematic sampling design. second assessed fractions under focal individuals six native woody two types (undisturbed/disturbed by roller-chopper wildfires). Soil samples extracted core following standard methods for SSB studies. Eleven found SSB. varied between 17.78 seeds/samples reference condition 5.46 more intensively (wildfires livestock). tree abundance was reduced shrubby increased. There no significant differences among each type forest, but fraction. forests, localization could promote loss fires desiccation. Our results improve forestry management plans areas exposed climate land-use change.

Regenerative potential and functional composition of soil seed banks in remnant evergreen broad-leaved forests under urbanization in South China

Soil seed banks can act as an important source in forest regeneration, and the information on the seed bank composition is vital for determining the resilience of plant communities under severe environments such as urban settings. In this study, we examined the seed bank density and functional composition, and their relationships with aboveground vegetation in three remnant evergreen broad-leav...

Abiotic Factors Influencing Tropical Dry Forests Regeneration

Tropical dry forests represent nearly half the tropical forests in the world and are the ecosystems registering the greatest deterioration from the anthropogenic exploitation of the land. This paper presents a review on the dynamics of tropical dry forests regeneration and the main abiotic factors influencing this regeneration, such as seasonal nature, soil fertility and humidity, and natural a...

The Fate of Seed Banks: Factors influencing Seed Survival for Light-demanding Species in Moist Tropical Forests

Seed mass in species-rich moist tropical forests often varies over six or more orders of magnitude (Foster, 1982; Foster and Janson, 1985; Hammond and Brown, 1995). Most of these species, including some with the minutest seeds (Metcalfe, 1996; Metcalfe and Grubb, 1997), can be classified as ‘shade-tolerant’ with the ability to establish beneath a closed canopy. Seeds of the shade-tolerators var...

Long-term persistence of pioneer species in tropical rain forest soil seed banks.

In tropical forests, pioneer tree species regenerate from seeds dispersed directly into canopy gaps and from seeds that persisted in soil seed banks before gap formation. Life-history models have suggested that selection for the long-term persistence of tree seeds in the soil should be weak because persistence potentially reduces population growth rate by extending generation time and because a...
