Soil nutrients increase long‐term soil carbon gains threefold on retired farmland

چکیده
Abstract Abandoned agricultural lands often accumulate soil carbon (C) following depletion of C by cultivation. The potential for this recovery to provide significant storage benefits depends on the rate accumulation, which, in turn, may depend nutrient supply rates. We tracked almost four decades intensive disturbance along an experimentally imposed gradient nitrogen (N) added annually combination with other macro‐ and micro‐nutrients. Soil %C accumulated over course study unfertilized control plots leading a gain 6.1 Mg ha −1 top 20 cm soil. Nutrient addition increased accumulation 17.8 fertilized plots, nearly threefold increase plots. These results demonstrate that substantial increases successional grasslands abandonment occur decadal timescales, is high rates nutrients. In addition, continued under elevated supply, suggesting short‐term experiments underestimate effects nutrients accumulation.

متن کاملLand Management Effects on Carbon Sequestration and Soil Properties in Reclaimed Farmland of Eastern Ohio, USA
Reclaimed mined soils (RMSs) could restore soil quality and ecosystem productivity while sequestering C and off-setting some of C emissions associated with coal utilization. The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of tillage and pasture management on soil physical properties, soil organic carbon (SOC) and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) in RMSs managed for agricultural use in eastern Ohi...
متن کاملModeling impacts of management alternatives on soil carbon storage of farmland in Northwest China
Long-term losses of soil organic carbon (SOC) have been observed in many agriculture lands in Northwest China, one of the regions with the longest cultivation history in the world. The decline of SOC contents not only impaired the soil fertility but also increased the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted from terrestrial ecosystems into the atmosphere. However, quantifying the SOC losses at r...
متن کاملChanges in Soil Carbon and Nitrogen following Land Abandonment of Farmland on the Loess Plateau, China
The revegetation of abandoned farmland significantly influences soil organic C (SOC) and total N (TN). However, the dynamics of both soil OC and N storage following the abandonment of farmland are not well understood. To learn more about soil C and N storages dynamics 30 years after the conversion of farmland to grassland, we measured SOC and TN content in paired grassland and farmland sites in...
متن کاملSoil organic carbon dynamics jointly controlled by climate, carbon inputs, soil properties and soil carbon fractions.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are regulated by the complex interplay of climatic, edaphic and biotic conditions. However, the interrelation of SOC and these drivers and their potential connection networks are rarely assessed quantitatively. Using observations of SOC dynamics with detailed soil properties from 90 field trials at 28 sites under different agroecosystems across the Australian ...
