Soil Moisture Variations From Boreal Forests to the Tundra

چکیده

Soil moisture has a profound influence on life Earth, and this vital water resource varies across space time. Here, we explored soil variations in boreal forest tundra environments, where comprehensive datasets are scarce. We installed sensors up to 14 cm depth at 503 measurement sites within seven study areas northern Europe. recorded 6 138 528 measurements capture of the snowless season from April September 2020. described spatio-temporal patterns moisture, test how these linked topography links vary found large spatial variation often less pronounced temporal all areas. that throughout periods both univariate multivariate models with topographic predictors showed great their performance relative moisture-topography relationships site-specific, as topography-based performed poorly when transferred one area another. There was no general solution would work well modelling topography. This should be carefully considered before applying proxies for moisture. Overall, data results highlight strong heterogeneity conditions environments.

Assessing Seasonal Backscatter Variations with Respect to Uncertainties in Soil Moisture Retrieval in Siberian Tundra Regions

Knowledge of surface hydrology is essential for many applications, including studies that aim to understand permafrost response to changing climate and the associated feedback mechanisms. Advanced remote sensing techniques make it possible to retrieve a range of land-surface variables, including radar retrieved soil moisture (SSM). It has been pointed out before that soil moisture retrieval fro...

Use of Ers-2 Sar Data for Estimating Soil Moisture and Vegetation Water Content Variations in Boreal Forests

The response of ERS-2 SAR to changes in soil and forest canopy moisture is investigated at a boreal forest test region in Finland. An inversion approach to estimate moisture characteristics from SAR data is applied. The method requires that a priori information on forest biomass (stem volume) and soil type distribution is available. The inversion technique provides estimates that are here, in a...

Estimating Soil Moisture in a Boreal Old Jack Pine Forest

Polarimetric Land P-band AIRSAR data, corresponding model simulations, and classification algorithms have shown that in a boreal old jack pine (OJP) stand, the principal scattering mechanism responsible for radar backscatter is the double-bounce mechanism between the tree trunks and the ground [1]. The data to be used here were taken during six flights from April to September 1994” as part of t...

Contrasting soil thermal responses to fire in Alaskan tundra and boreal forest

Recent fire activity throughout Alaska has increased the need to understand postfire impacts on soils and permafrost vulnerability. Our study utilized data and modeling from a permafrost and ecosystem gradient to develop a mechanistic understanding of the shortand long-term impacts of tundra and boreal forest fires on soil thermal dynamics. Fires influenced a variety of factors that altered the...

Topographical influences on soil properties in boreal forests

Topography is a major factor controlling both hydrological and soil processes at the landscape scale. This is well-known qualitatively in that topography, along with parent material, climate, biota, and time, is one of the fundamental soil forming factors. The topographic influence is also apparent in the soil catena concept. Digital elevation models (DEMs) and topographic indices calculated fr...
