چکیده
Abstract Although chickens can improve the chemical properties of soil through deposition excreta, their effects on macrofauna are poorly known. This work assessed grazing indigenous laying hens two agroecosystems in Portugal: an organic horticultural field and a conventional orchard. At field, were used to control weeds results compared with those other weed treatments: mechanical (rototiller) thermal (flame weeding). orchard, that orchard understory vegetation, as control. Soil epigeic was collected both locations, earthworms only field. Relative treatments, increased density medium term (ranging from 150 625 earthworms/m 2 ), without harming diversity macrofauna. However, at grazed soils presented lower diversity, well significantly spiders than (4.67 vs 8.67 individuals/sample, respectively). These suggest be affected by several factors, including type agroecosystem farm management. Further research is required optimize management different farming systems, considering animal duration, thus ensuring best contributions fertility.

Intestinal colonization of different Brachyspira spp. in laying hens
BACKGROUND:Avian intestinal spirochetosis (AIS) is causedby spiral-shaped Gram-negative Brachyspira spp. in poultry. It isknown as a cause of diarrhea, low egg production, and increasedoccurrence of dirty eggs in layer hens. OBJECTIVES: In this study, the presence of some Brachyspira spp. was investigated in layinghens. METHODS: A total of 100 cloacal swab samples wereindividually collected from...
متن کاملMeasurements of Soil Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Two Maize Agroecosystems at Harvest under Different Tillage Conditions
In this study a comparison of the soil CO2 fluxes emitted from two maize (Zea mays L.) fields with the same soil type was performed. Each field was treated with a different tillage technique: conventional tillage (30 cm depth ploughing) and no-tillage. Measurements were performed in the Po Valley (Italy) from September to October 2012, covering both pre- and postharvesting conditions, by means ...
متن کاملFactors Controlling Carbon Metabolism and Humification in Different Soil Agroecosystems
The aim of this study was to describe the processes that control humic carbon sequestration in soil. Three experimental sites differing in terms of management system and climate were selected: (i) Abanilla-Spain, soil treated with municipal solid wastes in Mediterranean semiarid climate; (ii) Puch-Germany, soil under intensive tillage and conventional agriculture in continental climate; and (ii...
متن کاملDifferent behavioral and physiological responses in two genetic lines of laying hens after transportation.
Physiological and behavioral responses to transportation stress were examined in a chicken strain selected for high group productivity and survivability (HGPS) resulting from reduced cannibalism and flightiness in colony cages and in chickens from Dekalb XL (DXL) commercial strain. At 13 wk of age, 96 pullets per strain were randomly assigned to 4-bird cages within the same strain. At 17 wk of ...
متن کاملDeposition rule of yolk cholesterol in two different breeds of laying hens.
The objective of this study was to investigate the deposition rule of yolk cholesterol in Lushi Green-shelled and Silky Fowl layers. A total of 90 layers of each breed were selected at an age of 15 to 51 weeks. Productive performance was recorded on a weekly basis, whereas yolk cholesterol was determined at 4-week intervals from 21 to 51 weeks of age. The average yolk cholesterol content of Sil...
