Sod Tensile Strength, Handling Quality, and Their Interrelationship for 39 Bermudagrasses

Suitable tensile strength is essential for sod harvest, transport, and installation. Thirty-nine bermudagrass ( Cynodon sp.) entries were evaluated handling quality (SHQ) (STS) during 2014–15. The SHQ (a discontinuous qualitative parameter) was using a 1 to 5 scale with = complete pad separation no cracking or in the excellent quality. STS quantitative determined force required shear/separate pad. Sod harvests conducted at 14, 22, 24 months after planting (MAP). entry, harvest date, their interaction affected SHQ. Entries OKC 1302 12-TSB-1 had greater than ‘Patriot’ but less ‘Latitude 36’, ‘Tifway’, ‘Astro’, ‘TifGrand’. seeded entry PST-R6T9S lowest overall mean 22 MAP, which could be attributed slow recovery of Winter 2014.
