چکیده
Social reference points have been identified to be important determinants of individuals’ welfare. We investigate the consequences social for risk taking in a laboratory experiment. In main treatments, risk-taking subjects observe predetermined earnings peer when making risky choice. exogenously manipulate peers’ and find significant treatment effect: decision makers make less risk-averse choices case larger earnings. The effect is consistent with an application prospect theory cannot explained by based on counterfactual information, anchoring, experimenter demand effects. additional analyses, we show that diminishing sensitivity seems play role subjects’ choices. explore also whether inequity aversion expectations-based can account our findings conclude they do not provide plausible alternative explanations them. Social Reference Points
The authors performed two experiments in which subjects were asked to make similarity judgments about social concepts, varying the direction of the comparison specified by the question. Asymmetries in rated similarity were used to diagnose concepts that function as habitual reference points. In Experiment 1 subjects rated a friend as more similar to themselves than vice versa along both social ...

We formally represent the effects of prior gains and losses in a simple dynamic preference calculus based on prospect theory's value function and thoughts adapted from aspiration level theories. We investigate our predictions in questionnaire experiments. Since we document a strong effect of prior gains and losses in our main study on entrepreneurial decision making, findings are consistent wit...

We study theoretically and experimentally decision making under uncertainty in a social environment. We introduce an interdependent preferences model that assumes that the decision maker evaluates monetary outcomes in relation both with his individual and his social reference point. In the experiment we reproduce a workplace environment whereby subjects interact in an effort task, earn (possibl...
متن کاملReference Points, Social Norms, and Fairness in Contract Renegotiations
How does an ex ante contract affect behavior in an ex post renegotiation game? We address this question in a canonical buyer-seller relationship with renegotiation. Our paper provides causal experimental evidence that an initial contract has a highly significant and economically important impact on renegotiation behavior that goes beyond the effect of contracts on bargaining threat points. We c...

In this paper, we study how social planners should exploit social comparisons to pursue their objectives. We consider two modes of social comparison, referred to as behind-averse and ahead-seeking behaviors, depending on whether individuals experience a utility loss from underperforming or a utility gain from overperforming relative to their peers. Modeling social comparison as a game between p...
