Social impacts of biodiversity offsetting: A review

چکیده
Biodiversity offsetting is the widely studied last step of mitigation hierarchy. Despite numerous studies and methodological development completed for biodiversity calculations, human aspect remains unsolved. conservation typically governed at national or state levels, but harm caused to as well people occurs locally. In offsetting, values can be relocated far from original area, relocating hold regarding their nearby nature may not possible. Quantifying habitat impacts of natural gas infrastructure to facilitate biodiversity offsetting
Habitat degradation through anthropogenic development is a key driver of biodiversity loss. One way to compensate losses is "biodiversity offsetting" (wherein biodiversity impacted is "replaced" through restoration elsewhere). A challenge in implementing offsets, which has received scant attention in the literature, is the accurate determination of residual biodiversity losses. We explore this ...
متن کاملTaming a Wicked Problem: Resolving Controversies in Biodiversity Offsetting
The rising popularity of biodiversity offsetting as a tool for balancing biodiversity losses from development with equivalent gains elsewhere has sparked debate on many fronts. The fundamental questions are the following: Is offsetting good, bad, or at least better than the status quo for biodiversity conservation outcomes, and what do we need to know to decide? We present a concise synthesis o...

Balancing society's competing needs of development and conservation requires careful consideration of tradeoffs. Renewable energy development and biodiversity conservation are often considered beneficial environmental goals. The direct footprint and disturbance of renewable energy, however, can displace species' habitat and negatively impact populations and natural communities if sited without ...
