Invertebrate Memory: Wide-Eyed Ants Retrieve Visual Snapshots
Ants retrieve visual memories to guide them en route to their goal. A new study shows that wood ants use object width to retrieve the correct visual memory at the appropriate position along their route. A computational model that accurately reproduces the ants' behaviour raises questions about the underlying mechanisms.
متن کاملParadigmatic Experiments: The Ultimatum Game from Testing to Measurement Device
The Ultimatum Game is one of the most successful experimental designs in the history of the social sciences. In this article I try to explain this success—what makes it a “paradigmatic experiment”—stressing in particular its versatility. Despite the intentions of its inventors, the Ultimatum Game was never a good design to test economic theory, and it is now mostly used as a heuristic tool for ...
متن کاملVisual navigation in desert ants Cataglyphis fortis: are snapshots coupled to a celestial system of reference?
Central-place foraging insects such as desert ants of the genus Cataglyphis use both path integration and landmarks to navigate during foraging excursions. The use of landmark information and a celestial system of reference for nest location was investigated by training desert ants returning from an artificial feeder to find the nest at one of four alternative positions located asymmetrically i...
متن کاملNew experiments and interpretations concerning the “XCN” band in interstellar ice analogues
Evidence for the formation of OCN− in interstellar ice analogues is summarized with an emphasis on the recent experiments of Demyk et al. (1998). Their experiments are reinterpreted in terms of two different types of chemical reactions, acid-base and oxidation-reduction. New spectra of UVphotolyzed and p+-irradiated ices are presented, and reasons for similarities considered. The role of e− and...
