On the Age of Psr B 1509-58
It is generally accepted that the PSR B 1509-58 is associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) MSH 15-52 (G 320.4-01.2). The spin-down age of the pulsar is ≃ 1700 years, while the size and the general appearance of the SNR suggest that this system is much older. It were put forward few possible explanations of this discrepancy. We offer an alternative one and suggest that the high spin-down rat...
متن کاملDiscovery of the Inner Ring around PSR B 1509 − 58
A Chandra study of pulsar wind nebula around the young energetic pulsar PSR B1509−58 is presented. The high resolution X-ray image with total exposure time of 190 ks reveals a ring like feature 10” apart from the pulsar. This feature is analogous to the inner ring seen in the Crab nebula and thus may correspond to a wind termination shock. The shock radius enables us to constrain the wind magne...
متن کاملTime - resolved optical observations of PSR 1509 - 58 ?
Using time resolved 2-dimensional aperture pho-tometry we have established that the optical candidate for PSR 1509-58 does not pulse. Our pulsed upper limits (m V = 24.3 and m B = 25.7) put severe constraints on this being the optical counterpart. Furthermore the colours of the candidate star are consistent with a main sequence star at a distance of 2-4 kpc. The probability of a chance coincide...
متن کاملOBSERVATIONS OF PULSARS , PSR 1509 − 58 AND PSR 1259 − 63 , BY CANGAROO 3 . 8 m TELESCOPE
The data for VHE (∼TeV) gamma rays from young gamma-ray pulsar PSR1509-58 observed in 1996 with the CANGAROO 3.8mČerenkov imaging telescope are presented, as well as the additional data from March to June of 1997. The high spin-down luminosity of the pulsar and the plerionic feature around the pulsar observed with radio and X-rays suggest that VHE gamma-ray emission is quite likely above the se...
متن کاملChandra Observations of Pulsar B 1509 – 58 and Supernova Remnant G 320
The young and energetic pulsar B1509–58 powers a bright X-ray synchrotron nebula, embedded in the unusual supernova remnant G320.4– 1.2. We present observations of this system with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which show a spectacularly complicated source. The nebula is dominated by a bright collimated feature which we interpret as a relativistic jet directed along the pulsar spin axis. Sever...
