Smooth Triaxial Weaving with Naturally Curved Ribbons

چکیده
Triaxial weaving is a handicraft technique that has long been used to create curved structures using initially straight and flat ribbons. Weavers typically introduce discrete topological defects produce nonzero Gaussian curvature, albeit with faceted surfaces. We demonstrate that, by tuning the in-plane curvature of ribbons, integrated weave can be varied continuously, which not feasible traditional techniques. Further, we reveal shape physical unit cells dictated solely geometry elasticity. Finally, leverage geometry-driven nature triaxial design set ribbon profiles smooth spherical, ellipsoidal, toroidal structures.

Curling and rolling dynamics of naturally curved ribbons.
When a straight rod is bent and suddenly released on one end, a burst of dispersive flexural waves propagates down the material as predicted by linear beam theories. However, we show that for ribbons with a longitudinal natural radius of curvature a0, geometrical constraints lead to strain localization which controls the dynamics. This localized region of deformation selects a specific curling ...
متن کاملNegatively Curved Manifolds with Exotic Smooth Structures
Let M denote a compact real hyperbolic manifold with dimensionm 2: 5 and sectional curvature K = I , and let 1: be an exotic sphere ofdimension m. Given any small number t5 > 0 , we show that there is a finitecovering space M of M satisfying the following properties: the connectedsum M#1: is not diffeomorphic to M, but it is homeomorphic to M; M#1:supports a Riemannian metri...
متن کاملSmooth Volume Rigidity for Manifolds with Negatively Curved Targets
We establish conditions for a continuous map of nonzero degree between a smooth closed manifold and a negatively curved manifold of dimension greater than four to be homotopic to a smooth cover, and in particular a diffeomorphism when the degree is one. The conditions hold when the volumes or entropy-volumes of the two manifolds differ by less than a uniform constant after an appropriate normal...
متن کاملInteractive Smooth and Curved Shell Mapping
Shell mapping is a technique to represent three-dimensional surface details. This is achieved by extruding the triangles of an existing mesh along their normals, and mapping a 3D function (e.g., a 3D texture) into the resulting prisms. Unfortunately, such a mapping is nonlinear. Previous approaches perform a piece-wise linear approximation by subdividing the prisms into tetrahedrons. However, s...
متن کاملSelf-similar curling of a naturally curved elastica.
We consider the curling of an initially flat but naturally curved elastica on a hard, nonadhesive surface. Combining theory, simulations, and experiments, we find novel behavior, including a constant front velocity and a self-similar shape of the curl that scales in size as t(1/3) at long times after the release of one end of the elastica. The front velocity is selected by matching the self-sim...
