Small-Scale Marijuana Growing: Deviant Careers as Serious Leisure

Previous research on marijuana growers in the United States has primarily focused those who have been incarcerated for activity (Weisheit, 1990; 1998). These tend to produce large amounts of product. It may be that scale arrested differ their reasons growing, style growing and distributing how they view as an from different types growers; namely small-scale, indoor hydroponic grow personal use enjoyment. Our study analyzes one social network central northern Florida. Through intensive field observations qualitative interviews with 8 people involved this closed growers, we discovered all followed a similar pattern initial trial error, learning new techniques another improve product, finally maintaining enabled them maximize taste, potency yield. All our sample were white middle class men (6) women (2) at least college degree had already or planned enter collar occupations (e.g., teacher business owner). Although profitable, greatly downplayed importance making money reason describing endeavor passionate performed enjoyment, save own money, high regard plants general. Discontinuing (thus exiting deviant career) is often influenced by such contingencies risk detection, commitment family, conventional occupations.
