Slipped-Strand Mispairing in the Gene Encoding Sialidase NanH3 in <i>Gardnerella</i> spp.

نویسندگان

چکیده

Cell wall proteins with sialidase activity are involved in carbohydrate assimilation, adhesion to mucosal surfaces, and biofilm formation. Gardnerella spp. inhabit the human vaginal microbiome encode up three enzymes, two of which suspected be cell associated. Here, we demonstrate that gene encoding extracellular NanH3 is found almost exclusively piotii closely related species genome sp. 3, its presence correlates a sialidase-positive phenotype collection 112 isolates.

Slipped-strand mispairing in a plastid gene: rpoC2 in grasses (Poaceae).

An exception to the generally conservative nature of plastid gene evolution is the gene coding for the beta" subunit of RNA polymerase, rpoC2. Previous work by others has shown that maize and rice have an insertion in the coding region of rpoC2, relative to spinach and tobacco. To assess the distribution of this extra coding sequence, we surveyed a broad phylogenetic sample comprising 55 specie...

Slipped-strand mispairing: a major mechanism for DNA sequence evolution.

Simple repetitive DNA sequences are a widespread and abundant feature of genomic DNA. The following several features characterize such sequences: (1) they typically consist of a variety of repeated motifs of 1-10 bases--but may include much larger repeats as well; (2) larger repeat units often include shorter ones within them; (3) long polypyrimidine and poly-CA tracts are often found; and (4) ...

Slipped-strand mispairing can function as a phase variation mechanism in Escherichia coli.

Slipped-strand mispairing (SSM) has not been identified as a mechanism of phase variation in Escherichia coli. Using a reporter gene, we show that sequences that cause phase variation by SSM in Haemophilus influenzae also lead to phase variation when introduced onto the chromosome of E. coli, and the frequencies of switching are in the biologically relevant range. Thus, the absence of SSM-media...

Slipped-strand mispairing at noncontiguous repeats in Poecilia reticulata: a model for minisatellite birth.

The standard slipped-strand mispairing (SSM) model for the formation of variable number tandem repeats (VNTRs) proposes that a few tandem repeats, produced by chance mutations, provide the "raw material" for VNTR expansion. However, this model is unlikely to explain the formation of VNTRs with long motifs (e.g., minisatellites), because the likelihood of a tandem repeat forming by chance decrea...
