Effect of slip distribution on nearfield tsunami amplitudes; the 1952 Kamchatka earthquake
We use the 1952 Kamchatka earthquake (Mw 8.8-9.0) and tsunami to explore the effect that internal slip distribution within a rupture has on tsunami amplitude in the nearfield. Our approach is to compare simulated tsunamis from 1952 Kamchatka with deposits in order to identify areas of high slip. Spatial variations in slip during tsunamigenic earthquakes result in variation in tsunami amplitude ...
متن کاملModeling near‐field tsunami observations to improve finite‐fault slip models for the 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake
[1] The massive tsunami generated by the 11 March 2011 Tohoku earthquake (Mw 9.0) was widely recorded by GPS buoys, wave gauges, and ocean bottom pressure sensors around the source. Numerous inversions for finite‐fault slip time histories have been performed using seismic and/ or geodetic observations, yielding generally consistent patterns of large co‐seismic slip offshore near the hypocenter ...

متن کاملGeological and historical records of tsunami in Australia
The Indian Ocean tsunami (IOT) of 2004 has resulted in significant interest within Australia about the record of tsunami for the continent because an understanding of tsunami hazard begins with a catalogue of past events. Here, a preliminary catalogue of tsunami affecting Australia is presented. The catalogue contains entries for 57 tsunami events. The oldest event is dated at 3.47 Ga, the most...
متن کاملAgent-based Simulation of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake/Tsunami Evacuation: An Integrated Model of Tsunami Inundation and Evacuation
The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake/Tsunami was a magnitude 9.0 Mw event that destroyed most structural tsunami countermeasures. However, approximately 90% of the estimated population at risk from the tsunami survived due to rapid evacuation to higher ground or inland. In this paper, we introduce an evacuation model integrated with a numerical simulation of a tsunami and a casualty estimation ...
