Size sound symbolism in the English lexicon

نویسندگان

چکیده

Experimental and cross-linguistic evidence suggests that certain speech sounds are associated with size, especially high front vowels ‘small’ low back ‘large’. However, empirical statistically magnitude across words within a language has been mixed open to methodological critique. Here, we used random-forest analysis of near-exhaustive set English size adjectives (e.g.,tiny, gargantuan) determine whether the lexicon is characterized by size-symbolic patterns. We show sound structure highly predictive semantic in adjectives, most strongly for phonemes /ɪ/, /i/, /ɑ/, /t/. In comparison, an much larger more than 2,500 general vocabulary rated finds no symbolism, thereby suggesting symbolism restricted adjectives. Our findings first demonstration statistical property lexicon.

Synthesized size-sound sound-symbolism

Studies of sound symbolism have shown that people can associate sound and meaning in consistent ways when presented with maximally contrastive stimulus pairs of nonwords such as bouba/kiki (rounded/sharp) or mil/mal (small/big). Recent work has shown the effect extends to antonymic words from natural languages and has proposed a role for shared cross-modal correspondences in biasing formto-mean...

Tsur Size – Sound Symbolism Revisited

In many of my writings I have argued that poetic images have no fixed predetermined meanings. In my 1992 book What Makes Sound Patterns Expressive?—The Poetic Mode of Speech Perception (originally published in 1987) I propounded the view that speech sounds do not have fixed predetermined symbolic values either.1 Poetic images as well as speech sounds are clusters of features, each of which may ...

Japanese Sound-Symbolism Facilitates Word Learning in English-Speaking Children

Sound-symbolism is the nonarbitrary link between the sound and meaning of a word. Japanesespeaking children performed better in a verb generalization task when they were taught novel sound-symbolic verbs, created based on existing Japanese sound-symbolic words, than novel nonsound-symbolic verbs (Imai, Kita, Nagumo, & Okada, 2008). A question remained as to whether the Japanese children had pic...

Sex-Biased Sound Symbolism in English-Language First Names

Sexual selection has resulted in sex-based size dimorphism in many mammals, including humans. In Western societies, average to taller stature men and comparatively shorter, slimmer women have higher reproductive success and are typically considered more attractive. This size dimorphism also extends to vocalisations in many species, again including humans, with larger individuals exhibiting lowe...

Sound Symbolism

Sound symbolism is the term for a hypothesized systematic relationship between sound and meaning (Hinton, Nichols, & Ohala 1994). The idea that there might be a non-arbitrary relationship between the physical aspect of a speech signal and its meaning is quite an old idea, dating back at least to the time of Plato who, in his work Cratylus, had Socrates debating with two pupils the issue of whet...
