Six Behaviors Policymakers Should Promote to Mitigate Climate Change

چکیده
Policymakers have a crucial role to play in averting climate catastrophe. Policies that rely on behavioral science principles encourage individuals reduce emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases can be an effective complement broader top-down policies, such as charging for emissions—provided the behavior-based policies focus actions with highest potential emissions. We conducted analysis identify behaviors greatest practical United States modeled effects their uptake. Our identified six prioritize: If adopted by 5%–10% U.S. population, these collectively lower current national 464 million metric tons equivalent per year, or 7% overall annually. mechanisms inform policy design promoting each behaviors.

Marine reserves can mitigate and promote adaptation to climate change.
Strong decreases in greenhouse gas emissions are required to meet the reduction trajectory resolved within the 2015 Paris Agreement. However, even these decreases will not avert serious stress and damage to life on Earth, and additional steps are needed to boost the resilience of ecosystems, safeguard their wildlife, and protect their capacity to supply vital goods and services. We discuss how ...

Production of biochar (the carbon (C)-rich solid formed by pyrolysis of biomass) and its storage in soils have been suggested as a means of abating climate change by sequestering carbon, while simultaneously providing energy and increasing crop yields. Substantial uncertainties exist, however, regarding the impact, capacity and sustainability of biochar at the global level. In this paper we est...
متن کاملSoil carbon sequestration to mitigate climate change
The increase in atmospheric concentration of CO2 by 31% since 1750 from fossil fuel combustion and land use change necessitates identification of strategies for mitigating the threat of the attendant global warming. Since the industrial revolution, global emissions of carbon (C) are estimated at 270F 30 Pg (Pg = petagram= 10 g = 1 billion ton) due to fossil fuel combustion and 136F 55 Pg due to...
متن کاملManagement to mitigate and adapt to climate change
Management decisions both at the field and off-site have the potential to contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. Climate change threatens to increase the potential for soil erosion, reduce soil quality, lower agricultural productivity and negatively impact food security and global sustainability, making it one of the most severe challenges we will face in the 21st century. This...
