Single-Point Calibration for Microwave Sounders: Application to TEMPEST-D

چکیده

Abstract Passive microwave sounders are critical for accurate forecasts from numerical weather prediction models. These sensors calibrated using a traditional two-point approach, with one source typically free-space blackbody target and the second clear view to cosmic background, commonly referred as “cold space.” Occasionally, or both of these calibration sources can become corrupted, either by solar/lunar intrusion in cold space thermal instability source. A Temporal Experiment Storms Tropical Systems (TEMPEST) sounder instrument is currently deployed on International Space Station (ISS) 3-yr mission. TEMPEST also view; however, will be routinely obstructed objects present ISS. Here we test an alternative single-point methodology that uses only target. We find brightness temperature difference between this new approach <0.1 K when applied 3 years CubeSat Demonstration (TEMPEST-D) mission data 2018 2020. This applicable other radiometers experience occasional degradation sources, such effects, intrusions, noise diodes. Significance Statement Cross-track have relied two distinct often background ambient tested single target, making sensor robust field-of-view intrusions alternatively simplifies spaceborne design eliminating need space. performance two-calibration indistinguishable temperature/water vapor profiling precipitation-rate estimation. technique past, current, future help diagnose systematic uncertainties targets.

Assessment of intercalibration methods for satellite microwave humidity sounders

[1] Three methods for intercalibrating humidity sounding channels are compared to assess their merits and demerits. The methods use the following: (1) natural targets (Antarctica and tropical oceans), (2) zonal average brightness temperatures, and (3) simultaneous nadir overpasses (SNOs). Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B instruments onboard the polar-orbiting NOAA 15 and NOAA 16 satellites ar...

Application of GPS radio occultation to the assessment of temperature profile retrievals from microwave and infrared sounders

Comparisons of satellite temperature profile products from GPS radio occultation (RO) and hyperspectral infrared (IR)/microwave (MW) sounders are made using a previously developed matchup technique. The profile matchup technique matches GPS RO and IR/MW sounder profiles temporally, within 1 h, and spatially, taking into account the unique RO profile geometry and theoretical spatial resolution b...

Polarimetric Microwave Radiometer Calibration

A polarimetric radiometer is a radiometer with the capability to measure the correlation information between vertically and horizontally polarized electric fields. To better understand and calibrate this type of radiometer, several research efforts have been undertaken. 1) All microwave radiometer measurements of brightness temperature (7B) include an additive noise component. The variance and ...
