Simulation of weak‐inertia single‐phase flow in porous materials using Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

Abstract Intrinsic permeability of a porous material is crucial parameter in various application fields like e.g. geosciences, materials science, biological sciences and mechanical engineering. In contrast to the often used purely linear models, however, it also (nonlinear) function Reynolds number (Re) with onset influence inertial forces. coarse‐grained continuum models Forchheimer equation describes this incipient viscous momentum exchange but based on adaptation experimentally obtained data its range validity remains subject for discussion. Performing three‐dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations single‐phase flow through media work aims show smooth transition effective intrinsic within interval 0.1 < Re 1000. We use fully‐Lagrangian meshless Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method (SPH) solve weakly compressible Navier‐Stokes equations pore‐scale resolved so‐called weak‐inertia regime. Our implementation utilizes HOOMD‐blue thus allows us perform massively parallel computations which are these applications.
