Simulation of O<sub>3</sub> and NO<sub><i>x</i></sub> in São Paulo street urban canyons with VEIN (v0.2.2) and MUNICH (v1.0)

Abstract. We evaluate the performance of Model Urban Network Intersecting Canyons and Highways (MUNICH) in simulating ozone (O3) nitrogen oxides (NOx) concentrations within urban street canyons São Paulo metropolitan area (SPMA). The MUNICH simulations are performed inside Pinheiros neighborhood (a residential area) Paulista Avenue (an economic hub), which representative SPMA. Both zones have air quality stations maintained by Environmental Agency (CETESB), providing data (both pollutant meteorological) for model evaluation. Meteorological inputs produced a simulation with Weather Research Forecasting (WRF) over triple-nested domains innermost domain centered SPMA at spatial grid resolution 1 km. Street coordinates emission flux rates retrieved from Vehicular Emission Inventory (VEIN) model, representing real fleet region. VEIN has an advantage to spatially represent emissions present compatibility MUNICH. Building height is estimated World Database Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT) local climate zone map Background obtained Ibirapuera station located park. Finally, volatile organic compound (VOC) speciation approximated using information forecast file non-methane hydrocarbon concentration measurements. Results show overprediction O3 both study cases. NOx underpredicted but better simulated Avenue. Compared O3, NO2 zones. prediction highly dependent on background concentration, main cause overprediction. satisfy criteria when calibrated. results great potential pollutants emitted close streets. street-scale predictions make it possible future impacts public health due human exposure primary exhaust gas vehicles.
