Simulation of Northern Winter Stratospheric Polar Vortex Regimes in CESM2-WACCM

چکیده
The possible impact of various Arctic polar vortex regimes for the stratosphere on Northern Hemisphere extratropics has not been fully understood. Previous study classified stratospheric to six using k-mean clustering algorithm based ERA5 reanalysis. stability and robustness classification is further verified with a much longer model dataset historical integrations from CESM2-WACCM. Consistent reanalysis, we clustered forms into patterns, named as homogeneously-intensified -weakened (HI, HW), North America-intensified (NAI, HAW), Eurasia-intensified (EUI, EUW). A zonally uniform positive (negative) Annular Mode (NAM) pattern develops during HI (HW) regime troposphere. NAM-like shifts toward western hemisphere largest negative (positive) anomalous height center shifting America NAI (NAW) regime. In contrast, maximum anomaly moves towards Eurasia EUI (EUW) HI, NAI, EUW are accompanied weakened wave activities, while HW, NAW, preceded by enhanced planetary waves. Accordingly, persistent anomalies warmth (coldness) exist over midlatitude (HW). Anomalous centers in northern Eurasia, coldness (warmth) around Mediterranean Sea develop East Asia periods. rainfall distributions also vary frequency SSWs strong events assessed consistent previous findings.

The Influence of the Solar Cycle and QBO on the Late Winter Stratospheric Polar Vortex
We conduct a statistical analysis of 51 years of NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis data to isolate the separate effects of the 11-year solar cycle (SC) and the equatorial Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) on the Northern Hemisphere stratosphere in late winter (February-March). In a four-group (SC-max vs. -min and eastvs. west-phase QBO) linear discriminant analysis, the state of the westerly phase QBO (wQBO)...

[1] This study considers the strength of the Northern Hemisphere Holton-Tan effect (HTE) in terms of the phase alignment of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) with respect to the annual cycle. Using the ERA-40 Reanalysis, it is found that the early winter (Nov–Dec) and late winter (Feb–Mar) relation between QBO phase and the strength of the stratospheric polar vortex is optimized for subsets ...

the relationship between the stratospheric conditions and evolution, and the surface weather, not only has revolutionized our understanding of the functions of different atmospheric layers and their dynamics, but has also brought about potential implications for weather and climate predictions in almost any region of the planet. obtaining a better understanding of the field, particularly in sou...
متن کاملStratospheric polar warming by ENSO in winter: A statistical study
[1] Applying Linear Discriminant Analysis on 47 years of NCEP stratospheric temperature data from 1959 to 2005, we find that the warm-ENSO (‘‘El Niño’’) years are significantly warmer also in the stratosphere at the Northern Hemisphere polar and midlatitudes than the cold-ENSO (‘‘La Niña’’) years, during winter. Specifically, the zonal mean, DecemberFebruary mean, 10–50 hPa mean temperature, wh...
متن کاملTropospheric Precursors of Anomalous Northern Hemisphere Stratospheric Polar Vortices
Regional extratropical tropospheric variability affects the wave driving of the Northern Hemisphere wintertime stratospheric polar vortex. Simple reasoning is used to understand the nature of the regional variability that reinforces extratropical planetary waves, and thus zonal wavenumber-1 and wavenumber-2 vertical EP flux leaving the troposphere. In the reanalysis record and in WACCM (Whole A...
