Simple fence modification increases land movement prospects for freshwater turtles on floodplains

چکیده
Installing conservation fences to prohibit feral animal access wetlands can become a barrier for non-target species of interest. We collected 161 turtles (Chelodina rugosa, Emydura subglobosa worrelli, Myuchelys latisternum) from twenty floodplain and riverine during post-wet (June–August) late-dry season (November–December) surveys (2015–2018) in northern Australia. Wetlands were fenced (150 × 150 mm square, 1.05 m high wire mesh) or unfenced around the wet perimeter. Ninety-seven percent individuals caught either had shell carapace width greater than mesh width, these 44 (46%) captured inside wetlands, while 50 wetlands. The remaining 35 smaller would likely pass easily through fence mesh. Sixty-five partook fencing manipulative experiment. Turtles with widths wider often successfully escaped by lifting one side their passing diagonally In second experiment where piece vertical (1500 300 mm) was removed, located ‘gates' after prospecting fitting meshing areas that too small pass. Ninety-two able locate gates, 8% failed gate 2 h. Gates applied every 4 showed an 83% passage rate, 91%, 1 100%. Combing field experiments revealed large will prospect move along until they find suitable passage, which has important consequences when considering gates could be retrofitted existing sites, as well new programs, enormous positive benefits already challenging changing environment.

متن کاملTerrestrial habitat requirements of nesting freshwater turtles
Because particular life history traits affect species vulnerability to development pressures, cross-species summaries of life history traits are useful for generating management guidelines. Conservation of aquatic turtles, many members of which are regionally or globally imperiled, requires knowing the extent of upland habitat used for nesting. Therefore, we compiled distances that nests and gr...
