Shuttle-box systems for studying preferred environmental ranges by aquatic animals

چکیده

Abstract Animals’ selection of environments within a preferred range is key to understanding their habitat selection, tolerance stressors and responses environmental change. For aquatic animals, ranges can be studied in so-called shuttle-boxes, where an animal choose its ambient environment by shuttling between separate choice chambers with differences variable. Over time, researchers have refined the shuttle-box technology applied them many different research contexts, we here review use shuttle-boxes as tool animals over past 50 years. Most studies on methodology been published latest decade, probably due increasing interest effects change, which underlines current popularity system. Tool use by aquatic animals.

Tool-use research has focused primarily on land-based animals, with less consideration given to aquatic animals and the environmental challenges and conditions they face. Here, we review aquatic tool use and examine the contributing ecological, physiological, cognitive and social factors. Environmental dermatology: skin manifestations of injuries caused by invertebrate aquatic animals*

Contact between humans and coastal areas has increased in recent decades, which has led to an increase in injuries from aquatic animals. The majority of these present dermatological manifestations, and some of them show typical lesions. The highest percentages of injuries that occur in marine environments are associated with invertebrates such as sea urchins, jellyfish and Portuguese men-of-war...

Pain in aquatic animals.

Recent developments in the study of pain in animals have demonstrated the potential for pain perception in a variety of wholly aquatic species such as molluscs, crustaceans and fish. This allows us to gain insight into how the ecological pressures and differential life history of living in a watery medium can yield novel data that inform the comparative physiology and evolution of pain. Nocicep...
