چکیده

Little is known about the effect of perennial biomass crops (PBCs) removal on soil C dynamics. The belowground (BGB) that composed by plant organs (PBO) such as rhizomes in herbaceous PBCs and stumps woody should be considered, together with fine roots (FR), a huge input exogenous organic matter (EOM) incorporated into at reversion. In this study, we mimic incorporation BGB through soil-residues incubation under controlled conditions to investigate effects adding FR PBO (at real field rates) N mineralization dynamics, understand decomposition controlling factors. A modified RothC model version, encompassing better description decomposable (DEOM) resistant (REOM) pools, was fitted curves respiration measured CO2 evolution incubated quantify partitioning factors rates components. After 1 month, showed higher (498 µg CO2-C gsoil−1) than (196 gsoil−1), black locust having highest amount respired (38% added C). emission peak occurred within 3 days from beginning experiment for after day FR. Generally, according version model, had proportion REOM FR, except locust. constant optimized were (kDEOM: 20.9 y−1, kREOM: 12.1 y−1) 0.4 0.1 y−1), indicating are less PBO. C/N ratio not main factor when residue limiting factor, while availability easily substrates (DEOM/REOM ratio) cell-wall composition strong predictor these EOM types. explicit inclusion crop-specific DEOM/REOM ratios or similar will help improve predictions long-term sequestration trajectories (half-life > 30 years) associated cultivation, especially dismission cropping systems addressed.

Dedicated biomass crops can enhance biodiversity in the arable landscape

Suggestions that novel, non-food, dedicated biomass crops used to produce bioenergy may provide opportunities to diversify and reinstate biodiversity in intensively managed farmland have not yet been fully tested at the landscape scale. Using two of the largest, currently available landscape-scale biodiversity data sets from arable and biomass bioenergy crops, we take a taxonomic and functional...

Lack of Impacts during Early Establishment Highlights a Short-Term Management Window for Minimizing Invasions from Perennial Biomass Crops

Managing intentional species introductions requires evaluating potential ecological risks. However, it is difficult to weigh costs and benefits when data about interactions between novel species and the communities they are introduced to are scarce. In anticipation of expanded cultivation of perennial biomass crops, we experimentally introduced Miscanthus sinensis and Miscanthus × giganteus (tw...

Shoot to root ratios (S:R) at peak standing crop are commonly used to estimate the annual crop residue C inputs to the soil from the root biomass left in the soil at harvest. However, root biomass ...

Influence of Different Culture Selection Methods on Polyhydroxyalkanoate Production at Short-term Biomass Enrichment

In this study, the potential of four different culture selection methods under short-term enrichment time (STE) to accumulate PHA-producing bacteria in mixed activated sludge was compared and the most efficient culture selection method was introduced. This means, PHA-producing microbial community was firstly enriched in a sequencing batch bioreactor (SBR) with four different selection methods i...

Valorization of Agroforest Crops for Biomass Utilization

There is a growing need to consider alternative agricultural strategies that move an agricultural industry focused on food production to one that also supplies the needs of other industrial sectors, such as paper, textiles, biofuels or added-value chemicals, in the context of the so-called lignocellulose biorefinery. Biorefineries use renewable raw materials to produce energy together with a wi...
