Shock Wave Propagation in Porous Ice
We present data on shock wave propagation in porous ice under conditions applicable to the outer solar system. The equation of state of porous ice under low temperature and low pressure conditions agrees well with measurements under terrestrial conditions implying that data on terrestrial snow may be applicable to the outer solar system. We also observe rarefaction waves from small regions of i...
متن کاملPOROSITY EFFECTS ON IMPACT PROCESSES IN SOLAR SYSTEM MATERIALS: Shock Wave Propagation in Porous Ice
We are conducting a study of the effects of porosity on shock wave propagation and attenuation in geologic materials. We present data on shock wave propagation in porous ice under conditions applicable to mutual collisions in the outer solar system. We observe rarefaction waves from small regions of increased porosity and calculate release wave velocities.
متن کاملDamage Assessment in Glass Fiber-Epoxy Matrix Composite under High Velocity Impact of Ice
This study investigated the influence of nanoclay on the impact damage resistance of glass fiber-epoxy composites under high velocity ice impact loading. Addition of 0.5 wt. % nanoclay into epoxy was shown to improve damage resistance compared to composite plates having no nanoclay platelet. The glass fiber-epoxy composites containing nanoclay brought about substantial improvement in ice impact...
متن کاملSimilarity solution of the shock wave propagation in water
This paper presents the possibility of calculation of propagation of a shock wave generated during the bubble collapse in water including the dissipation effect. The used semi-empirical model is based on an assumption of similarity between the shock pressure time profiles in different shock wave positions. This assumption leads to a system of two ordinary differential equations for pressure jum...
متن کاملFragmentation of ice by low velocity impact
Low velocity impact experiments (0.14 to l km/ s) carried out in polycrystalline water ice targets at 257 and 81 K resulted in interactions which can be assigned to four fragmentation classes, cratering, erosion, disruption, and total fragmentation. Specific kinetic energies for the transitions between these classes range from l x 105 to 7 x 105 ergs/g for 81 K ice and from 3 x 105 to 2 x 106 e...
