Shell-and-Tube Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Design Methodology with Material Selection, Storage Performance Evaluation, and Cost Minimization

Shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage units employ phase change materials to store and release at a nearly constant temperature, deliver high effectiveness of transfer, as well charging/discharging power. Even though many studies have investigated the material formulation, transfer through simulation, experimental studies, there is limited research dedicated unit design methodology. This study proposes comprehensive methodology that includes assessment with multi-attribute decision-making multi-objective tools, epsilon-NTU method, cost minimization using Genetic Algorithm. The validated by series results, implemented in optimization for solar absorption chiller application. A low USD 8396 per reported power 1.42 kW. proves be an efficient, reliable, systematic tool fulfill preliminary shell-and-tube LHTES before computational fluid dynamics or detailed are engaged.
