Shear wave splitting in the Alpine region

چکیده
SUMMARY To constrain seismic anisotropy under and around the Alps in Europe, we study SKS shear wave splitting from region densely covered by AlpArray network. We apply a technique based on measuring intensity, constraining well both fast orientation delay. Four years of teleseismic earthquake data were processed, 723 temporary permanent broad-band stations deployment including ocean-bottom seismometers, providing spatial coverage that is unprecedented. The applied automatically (without human intervention), it thus provides reproducible image anisotropic structure Alpine region. As earlier studies, observe coherent rotation axes western part chain, homogeneous Central Alps. variation delay times particularly interesting though. On one hand, there clear positive correlation with topography, suggesting (deformation) caused orogeny. other strength mountain chain shows distinct contrast between Western Eastern This difference best explained more active mantle flow new observational constraints, especially delay, provide information geodynamics.

متن کاملNull Detection in Shear-Wave Splitting Measurements
Shear-wave splitting measurements are widely used to analyze orientations of anisotropy. We compare two different shear-wave splitting techniques, which are generally assumed to give similar results. Using a synthetic test, which covers the whole backazimuthal range, we find characteristic differences, however, in fast-axis and delay-time estimates near Null directions between the rotation corr...
متن کاملMaking Reliable Shear-Wave Splitting Measurements
Shear-wave splitting (SWS) analysis using SKS, SKKS, and PKS (hereafter collectively called XKS) phases is one of the most commonly used techniques in structural seismology. In spite of the apparent simplicity in performing SWS measurements, large discrepancies in published SWS parameters (fast direction and splitting time) suggest that a significant portion of splitting parameters has been inc...
متن کاملFrequency-dependent shear wave splitting and heterogeneous anisotropic structure beneath the Gulf of California region
The Gulf of California region has undergone a major evolution over the past ∼15Ma, since subduction of the now-extinct Farallon plate ceased and transform motion began, leading to the initiation of rifting and the opening of the Gulf of California ∼5Ma ago. The character of dynamic processes in the upper mantle beneath the region remains poorly understood, but constraints on seismic anisotropy ...
متن کاملShear - Wave Splitting in the Appalachians and theUrals : A
Observations of shear-wave splitting in the Northeastern US Appalachians and in the foredeep of the Urals vary signiicantly with the back azimuth and incidence angle of the incoming phase. These variations suggest two or more layers within the upper mantle with diierent anisotropic properties. Synthetic seismograms for simple multilayered anisotropic structures show that shear-wave splitting pa...
