چکیده

Abstract Background Seamounts are underwater mountains which typically rise rather steeply at least several hundred meters above the deep-sea floor. These geological features interrupt water flow and hence may induce changes in circulation of different masses, turn causing physical biological effects. For this reason, seamounts biodiversity hotspots, housing a wide number species, as is with case Seine Unicorn seamounts, part Madeira-Tore seamount chain located between Portugal mainland, southwestern Europe Madeira archipelago (NE Atlantic). Methods Fisheries independent surveys allowed collection Chondrichthyes specimens from seamounts. Individuals were caught over course two research cruises, first 2004 later 2017, species distribution ranging summit down to 2500 m depth. Results Fifteen belonging 7 taxonomical families collected surveyed areas. Two recorded for time added checklist ( Centrophorus granulosus Somniosus rostratus ), three C. , Centroscymnus coelolepis Centroselachus crepidater ). Distribution frequency occurrence evaluated relation Conclusions This work valuable contribution knowledge seamount-associated fish fauna. Moreover, sharks, rays chimaeras was updated summing up 20 species.

Spionidae (Polychaeta: Canalipalpata: Spionida) from seamounts in the NE Atlantic.

Spionidae (Polychaeta) collected from seamounts in the Atlantic Ocean were studied. Altogether six species were found of which two are new to science and one belongs to a new genus. Aonidella cf. dayi Maciolek in López-Jamar, 1989 and Glandulospio orestes gen. et sp. nov. were the most common species and occurred on both the Great and Little Meteor Seamount, the Irving Seamount and the Hyeres S...

The effects of fishing on sharks, rays, and chimaeras (chondrichthyans), and the implications for marine ecosystems

The impact of fishing on chondrichthyan stocks around the world is currently the focus of considerable international concern. Most chondrichthyan populations are of low productivity relative to teleost fishes, a consequence of their different life-history strategies. This is reflected in the poor record of sustainability of target shark fisheries. Most sharks and some batoids are predators at, ...

Introduction to the systematics and biodiversity of sharks, rays, and chimaeras (Chondrichthyes) of Taiwan.

All 13 orders of chondrichthyan fishes occur in Taiwanese waters, representing 52 chondrichthyan families (31 shark, 19 batoid, 2 chimaeroid) and 98 genera (64 shark, 31 batoid, 3 chimaeroid). A total of 119 shark, 58 batoid, and 4 chimaera species may occur in the waters surrounding Taiwan, pending taxonomic resolution of some groups. Of the 34 nominally described species from Taiwan, 17 are c...

The importance of habitat and life history to extinction risk in sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras.

We compared life-history traits and extinction risk of chondrichthyans (sharks, rays and chimaeras), a group of high conservation concern, from the three major marine habitats (continental shelves, open ocean and deep sea), controlling for phylogenetic correlation. Deep-water chondrichthyans had a higher age at maturity and longevity, and a lower growth completion rate than shallow-water specie...

Chapter 4. Susceptibility of sharks, rays and chimaeras to global extinction.

Marine biodiversity worldwide is under increasing threat, primarily as a result of over-harvesting, pollution and climate change. Chondrichthyan fishes (sharks, rays and chimaeras) have a perceived higher intrinsic risk of extinction compared to other fish. Direct fishing mortality has driven many declines, even though some smaller fisheries persist without associated declines. Mixed-species fi...
