Shape optimization of a snowboard sidecut geometry

Abstract The distribution of the contact pressure occurring under edge a snowboard during carved turn is key factor influencing riding behaviour. These interface loads are determined by structural design, and in particular sidecut geometry line. In this study, following inverse problem was set investigation: if certain wished, how can corresponding initial be determined? A optimization strategy presented, involving parametric B-spline representation geometry, finite element modeling composite structure deforming against rigid surface, frictional formulation derivative-free algorithm. leading to uniformly distributed along line sought, illustrate capabilities method. An actual prototype made according outcome optimization, an experimental validation conducted measure physical assess accuracy numerical predictions. With proposed method, design controlled state variables deformed rather than variables, thus providing alternative shortcut classical trial error development strategies.
