Sex Determination: Sex on the Brain?
Five newly identified sex-biased transcripts in Drosophila are full of surprises: although they are found in fly heads, and manipulating two of them affects mating behaviors, their genes are expressed sex-specifically in non-neural tissues. The way these genes are regulated suggests new complexities in the sex determination pathway.

Release of testosterone during early development is necessary for masculinization of brain structures in rodents. Wu et al. (2009) now elucidate the neuronal changes caused by aromatase-mediated conversion of testosterone into estrogen in perinatal mice and the ensuing effects on adult behavior.

It was called phrenology and it claimed that a person’s character could be read by a trained doctor feeling the bumps and dips on the patient’s skull. The concept was developed by Franz Joseph Gall i...
متن کاملMammalian sex determination: from gonads to brain.
In mammals, sex is determined by the Y chromosome, which encodes a testis-determining factor (TDF). This factor causes the undifferentiated embryonic gonads to develop as testes rather than ovaries. The testes subsequently produce the male sex hormones that are responsible for all male sexual characteristics. In 1990, the sex-determining gene, TDF, was identified and termed SRY in humans (Sry i...
