Severe neonatal hypernatraemia: a population based study.

AIMS To describe incidence, presentation, treatment and short term outcomes of severe neonatal hypernatraemia (SNH, sodium ≥160 mmol/l). METHODS Prospective, population based surveillance study over 13 months using the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit. Cases were >33 weeks gestation at birth, fed breast or formula milk and <28 days of age at presentation. RESULTS Of 62 cases of SNH repo...

Severe hypernatraemia in a very preterm infant.

Hypernatraemia in very low birth weight babies has been well documented and is usually attributable to excessive insensible water loss. We report a case in which, despite a peak serum sodium concentration of 204 mmol/l, the baby survived without morbidity. Treatment was simply to increase the intake of free water in Dextrose.

Temporal trends in severe maternal and neonatal trauma during childbirth: a population-based observational study

OBJECTIVE Instrumental vaginal delivery is associated with birth trauma to infant and obstetric trauma to mother. As caesarean delivery rates increased during the past decades, the rate of instrumental vaginal delivery declined. We examined concomitant temporal changes in the rates of severe birth trauma and maternal obstetric trauma. DESIGN A retrospective observational study. SETTINGS AND...

Serious hypernatraemia in a hospital population.

Severe hypernatraemia in a hospital population should be an avoidable problem. We have looked at its causes and incidence over one year and have shown that serious hypernatraemia (serum sodium greater than 160 mmol/l) as a manifestation of severe dehydration is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. Failure to maintain adequate fluid intake, intentional or unintentional, was the most f...

Trends in use of neonatal CPAP: a population-based study

BACKGROUND Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is used widely to provide respiratory support for neonates, and is often the first treatment choice in tertiary centres. Recent trials have demonstrated that CPAP reduces need for intubation and ventilation for infants born at 25-28 weeks gestation, and at > 32 weeks, in non-tertiary hospitals, CPAP reduces need for transfer to NICU. The aim...
