Serverless computing for cloud-based power grid emergency generation dispatch

Operating a modern power grid reliably in case of SCADA/EMS failure or amid difficult times like COVID-19 pandemic is challenging task for operators. In [11], PMU-based emergency generation dispatch scheme has been proposed to help the system operators with supply and demand balancing; however, its realization highly relies on control center infrastructure computing communication. This work, rather than using on-premises server communication system, proposes implements cloud-centric serverless architecture ensure operation continuity regardless local infrastructure’s availability accessibility. Through prototype implementation evaluation at ISO New England, solution demonstrated two major advantages. Firstly, cloud independent fault-tolerant, providing monitoring capability even when EMS loses corresponding functionality need work remotely away from center. Secondly, overall design event-driven services response event. Thanks “serverless”, burden provisioning maintenance can be avoided user side. The cost public this extremely low since it architected implemented based Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) model. also develops comprehensive cyber security mechanism comply critical requirements grid, which serve as an exemplary framework other secure their services.
