Serotypes of bovine rotaviruses distinguished by serum neutralization.
Fourteen cytopathic bovine rotaviruses isolated from naturally affected calves were characterized serologically by serum neutralization. Antisera were prepared in guinea pigs against the three isolates and the Lincoln strain of bovine rotavirus. These four rotaviruses were segregated into at least two distinct serotypes (designated types 1 and 2) by serum neutralization. The remaining 11 isolat...
متن کاملDetection of Astrovirus in Historical Cases of European Sporadic Bovine Encephalitis, Switzerland 1958–1976
European sporadic bovine encephalitis is a frequent diagnosis in neurologically diseased cattle, but its etiology remained unresolved. Using in situ hybridization, we have detected a recently discovered neurotropic bovine astrovirus in historical tissues in a high proportion of brain samples of affected cattle. Our results suggest that astroviruses were already involved in the pathogenesis of t...
متن کاملIncidence of human astrovirus in central Australia (1995 to 1998) and comparison of deduced serotypes detected from 1981 to 1998.
The incidence of astrovirus infection was determined among infants and young children admitted to Alice Springs Hospital (central Australia) with gastroenteritis from 1995 to 1998. Astrovirus was detected by reverse transcription-PCR in 33 of 495 stool samples, and this represented 4.3% of a total of 774 stool samples tested for astrovirus, rotavirus, and Norwalk-like viruses. Astrovirus incide...
متن کاملSeroepidemiology of astrovirus MLB1.
To determine the seroprevalence of astrovirus MLB1 (MLB1), an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was established. MLB1 seropositivity was high in children <6 months old, decreased to a nadir at 12 to 23 months old, and increased to 100% by adulthood. MLB1 infection is common, and primary exposure occurs in childhood.
متن کاملAstrovirus Pathogenesis
Astroviruses are a major cause of diarrhea in the young, elderly, and the immunocompromised. Since the discovery of human astrovirus type 1 (HAstV-1) in 1975, the family Astroviridae has expanded to include two more human clades and numerous mammalian and avian-specific genotypes. Despite this, there is still little known about pathogenesis. The following review highlights the current knowledge...
