Serious Problems With Interpreting Rubber Hand “Illusion” Experiments

چکیده
The rubber hand “illusion” (RHI), in which participants report experiences of ownership over a fake hand, appears to demonstrate that subjective one’s body can be easily disrupted. It was recently shown existing methods controlling for suggestion effects RHI responding are invalid. also propensity agree with statements is correlated trait phenomenological control (response imaginative suggestion). There currently disagreement regarding the extent this relationship may cofound interpretation measures. Here we present results simulated experiments between and size reported would fundamentally change way must interpreted. Using real participant data, each experiment used sample biased selection control. We find using samples comprised only higher almost guarantees an provides evidence consistent RHI. By contrast, lower around half time – greater concern, specifically “ownership” experience just 4% time. These findings clearly contradict claims magnitude minor demonstrating presence given critical finding Further study theorising (and related effects) take into account role plays responses during experiments.

Two-Dimensional Rubber-Hand Illusion: The Dorian Gray Hand Illusion.
The rubber-hand illusion provides a window into body representation and consciousness. It has been found that body-ownership extended to numerous hand-like objects. Interestingly, the vast majority of these objects were three-dimensional. We adopted this paradigm by using hand drawings to investigate whether rubber-hand illusion could be extended to two-dimensional hand samples, and we measured...

Watching a rubber hand being stroked by a paintbrush while feeling identical stroking of one's own occluded hand can create a compelling illusion that the seen hand becomes part of one's own body. It has been suggested that this so-called rubber hand illusion (RHI) does not simply reflect a bottom-up multisensory integration process but that the illusion is also modulated by top-down, cognitive...
متن کاملRubber Hand Illusion Affects Joint Angle Perception
The Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) is a well-established experimental paradigm. It has been shown that the RHI can affect hand location estimates, arm and hand motion towards goals, the subjective visual appearance of the own hand, and the feeling of body ownership. Several studies also indicate that the peri-hand space is partially remapped around the rubber hand. Nonetheless, the question remains...
متن کاملMovement and the rubber hand illusion.
When a participant views a rubber hand being stroked by a paintbrush while his/her real hand is unseen and similarly stroked by another paintbrush, a misperception known as the rubber hand illusion occurs whereby tactile sensations are falsely referred to the non-body part. The purpose of the current study was to further examine the rubber hand illusion with conditions of movement. An apparatus...
متن کاملRubber Hand Illusion under Delayed Visual Feedback
BACKGROUND Rubber hand illusion (RHI) is a subject's illusion of the self-ownership of a rubber hand that was touched synchronously with their own hand. Although previous studies have confirmed that this illusion disappears when the rubber hand was touched asynchronously with the subject's hand, the minimum temporal discrepancy of these two events for attenuation of RHI has not been examined. ...
