Self‐healing behavior in blends of PDMS‐based polyurethane ionomers

Ionic interactions offer the highest non-covalent cohesive strength in supramolecular assemblies. In spite of that, they have been consistently underestimated development self-healing materials due to their lack directionality and association specificity. this paper, ionic moieties are introduced as side-chain pendants poly(urea-urethane) siloxane-based polymers, aiming obtain a strong yet flexible elastomer with capability recover from damaged state. The synthesis was carried out by two-step polymerization involving polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) diamine-terminated, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) chain extender providing required functionality. Internal phase separation allowed material show its elastomeric behavior. After preparation blend mechanical mixing, formation checked for FT-IR spectroscopy, rheological analysis tensile tests. Healing notch damage evaluated both respect fracture toughness. At room temperature (21°C) humidity (30% RH) maximum recovery measured at 14 days 47%. Self-healing dependence on assessed, resulting further improvements (up 100%) molecular mobility increased conditions.
