Well-developed reading comprehension skills are emphasized across the National Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) of South Africa (DBE, 2011) as sufficient central to successful learning in all subjects. Despite high importance effective skills, standard intermediate phase learners remains alarmingly low when considering results international assessments. From these results, it becomes clear that do not have adequate they assessed on content a text. Although criteria for text selection exist, cause poor can possibly be attributed inappropriate selection. For this article, readability level prescribed texts possible obstacle was examined. Various indices were investigated, specifically, those used Afrikaans Home Language measure textual complexity. The home language textbooks (intermediate phase) calculated. investigation approached from interpretivism is qualitative nature. Firstly, an extensive literature review launched into situation regarding learners, texts, selection, readability, indices.
