Self, Reality, Knowledge and Theory: Is Social Constructionism Antithetical to Sport and Exercise Psychology Research?

Sport and exercise psychology researchers produce research to help athletes, exercisers, coaches, parents. This research, both qualitative quantitative, is predicated on an implicit at times explicit endorsement of a mind agentic self. For discipline such as psychology, it cannot be over-stated that belief in mind, well all the thoughts feelings are based, critical. An self person who has ability act independently, make choices, demonstrate free will conscious self-aware. Unfortunately, social constructionists often minimize or outright disavow and, by extension, can understand reality. In current paper, I provide historical philosophical overview critique constructionism sport its mind-minimizing/denying philosophy. At same time, highlight clearly demonstrates primacy (i.e., practical adequacy, causation, cognitive niche, theory mind). Researchers should consider if conducting grounded philosophy science denies and/or minimizes supports moral relativism, defensible position.
