Seismic signatures of individual wave impacts on a coastal cliff

چکیده
The mechanisms through which wave action induces cliff erosion are not well quantified, limits our ability to model future erosion. Previous studies have investigated using seismic measurements of cliff-top ground motion from impacts as a proxy for potential driven However, most attention has focussed on averaged hourly statistics, rather than at the individual impact scale. Higher temporal resolution needed determine extent frequent, low magnitude transfer energy into rock, compared violent that occur much less frequently. We carried out fieldwork in Taranaki, New Zealand is exposed broken, breaking, and unbroken different tidal stages. Synchronized seismometer, gauge, video data were collected observe range types under marine conditions. Approximately 7500 manually classified eight groups according stage transformation data. Corresponding signals then analysed compare types. greatest peaks associated with classes identifiable by breaking just front of, or onto face. Waves classed broken had median displacement 4.2 μm 5.1 μm, respectively, whereas value 25.8 μm. Spectral analyses suggest produce frequency bands, total higher classes. This research provides first step assessing spectral signature an scale, providing new method investigate wave–cliff interaction.

Extreme wave run-up on a vertical cliff
Wave impact and run-up onto vertical obstacles constitutes one of the main phenomena which have to be taken into account in the design of coastal structures. From the linear wave theory we know that the wave height on a vertical wall is twice the incident wave amplitude. Weakly nonlinear theories bring some small corrections to this result. However, in the present study we show that certain sim...
متن کاملOn Seismic Signatures of Rapid Variation
We present an improved model for an asteroseismic diagnostic contained in the frequency spacing of low-degree acoustic modes. By modelling in a realistic manner regions of rapid variation of dynamically relevant quantities, which we call acoustic glitches, we can derive signatures of the gross properties of those glitches. In particular, we are interested in measuring properties that are relate...

Probabilistic methods provide a means of demonstrating the potential variability in predictions of coastal cliff recession. They form the basis for risk-based land use planning, cliff management and engineering decision-making. A range of probabilistic methods for predicting soft coastal cliff recession has now been developed, including statistical techniques, process-based simulation and struc...
متن کاملRF Signatures of Hypervelocity Impacts on Spacecraft
We investigate the radio frequency (RF) signature resulting from a hypervelocity impact on a spacecraft. While hypervelocity impactors, consisting of meteoroids, dust and orbital debris, are known to cause mechanical damage to satellites, very little is understood about the electrical effects associated with an impact. We present a theory to describe the behavior of the plasma produced from a h...
متن کاملImpacts on Coralligenous Outcrop Biodiversity of a Dramatic Coastal Storm
Extreme events are rare, stochastic perturbations that can cause abrupt and dramatic ecological change within a short period of time relative to the lifespan of organisms. Studies over time provide exceptional opportunities to detect the effects of extreme climatic events and to measure their impacts by quantifying rates of change at population and community levels. In this study, we show how a...
