vowel quality in persian: stable or unstable?
this paper addresses the validity of two hypotheses concerning changes of vowel quality in persian. the theory of centralization claims that there is a strong correlation between vowel duration and vowel quality. as vowel duration is shortened in unstressed contexts, the size of the vowel inventory reduces toward the center, leading to considerable overlap between different categories and a red...
متن کاملWhy are proteins marginally stable?
Most globular proteins are marginally stable regardless of size or activity. The most common interpretation is that proteins must be marginally stable in order to function, and so marginal stability represents the results of positive selection. We consider the issue of marginal stability directly using model proteins and the dynamical aspects of protein evolution in populations. We find that th...
متن کاملThe glacial thermohaline circulation: Stable or unstable?
[1] The stability of the glacial thermohaline circulation (THC) with respect to North Atlantic freshwater input is examined using a global ocean general circulation model. It is found that the quasi-equilibrium hysteresis behaviour is much less pronounced under glacial conditions than under present-day conditions, and the existence of multiple equilibria requires an anomalous freshwater inflow....
متن کاملDEVS Simulation of Marginally Stable Systems
In this paper we study the simulation of marginally stable systems using the methods of Quantized State Systems of first order (QSS) and second order (QSS2). We show that the simulation global error can be bounded by a magnitude which grows linearly with the time. Consequently, the direct use of QSS and QSS2 in these systems yields unstable simulation results. Therefore, we propose a modificati...
متن کاملCurvature estimates for stable marginally trapped surfaces
We derive local integral and supestimates for the curvature of stably marginally outer trapped surfaces in a sliced space-time. The estimates bound the shear of a marginally outer trapped surface in terms of the intrinsic and extrinsic curvature of a slice containing the surface. These estimates are well adapted to situations of physical interest, such as dynamical horizons.
