Seed-coat thickness explains contrasting germination responses to smoke and heat in Leucadendron

چکیده

Abstract Fire stimulates the germination of most seeds in fire-prone vegetation. Fruits Leucadendron (Proteaceae) are winged achenes or nutlets that correlate with their requirements for smoke and/or heat promoting germination. We describe five possible smoke–heat dormancy-release/germination syndromes among plants, which displays three (no response, only, and heat). As seed-coat thickness varies seed-storage location (plant soil) morphology (winged wingless), we tested its role water uptake Species achieved 100% absence smoke/heat, seed coats were an order magnitude thinner, permeability greatly exceeded nutlets. increased (1) imbibitional declined at a decreasing rate, (2) response to smoke, lesser extent heat, linearly reach levels approaching those seeds. For species responsive there was no additive effect when applied together, suggesting they may have promoted same physiological process. conclude holds key this genus, independent morphology. By what mechanisms is greater thicker coat chemicals might increase explain non-additive warrant further investigation.

Tomato Seed Coat Permeability to Selected Carbon Nanomaterials and Enhancement of Germination and Seedling Growth

Seed coat permeability was examined using a model that tested the effects of soaking tomato (Solanum lycopersicon) seeds in combination with carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNMs) and ultrasonic irradiation (US). Penetration of seed coats to the embryo by CBNMs, as well as CBNMs effects on seed germination and seedling growth, was examined. Two CBNMs, C60(OH)20 (fullerol) and multiwalled nanotubes ...

Retraction notice for: Carbon nanotubes are able to penetrate plant seed coat and dramatically affect seed germination and plant growth.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were found to penetrate tomato seeds and affect their germination and growth rates. The germination was found to be dramatically higher for seeds that germinated on medium containing CNTs (10-40 mug/mL) compared to control. Analytical methods indicated that the CNTs are able to penetrate the thick seed coat and support water uptake inside seeds, a process which can affec...

A seed coat bedding assay to genetically explore in vitro how the endosperm controls seed germination in Arabidopsis thaliana.

The Arabidopsis endosperm consists of a single cell layer surrounding the mature embryo and playing an essential role to prevent the germination of dormant seeds or that of nondormant seeds irradiated by a far red (FR) light pulse. In order to further gain insight into the molecular genetic mechanisms underlying the germination repressive activity exerted by the endosperm, a "seed coat bedding"...

Responses of Seed Germination, Seedling Growth, and Seed Yield Traits to Seed Pretreatment in Maize (Zea mays L.)

A series of seed priming experiments were conducted to test the effects of different pretreatment methods to seed germination, seedling growth, and seed yield traits in maize (Zea mays L.). Results indicated that the seeds primed by gibberellins (GA), NaCl, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) reagents showed a higher imbibitions rate compared to those primed with water. The final germination percenta...
