Sediment size on talus slopes correlates with fracture spacing on bedrock cliffs: implications for predicting initial sediment size distributions on hillslopes

چکیده

Abstract. The detachment of rock fragments from fractured bedrock on hillslopes creates sediment with an initial size distribution that sets the upper limits particle for all subsequent stages in evolution landscapes. We hypothesize should depend latent (i.e., fracture-bound blocks unweathered bedrock) and weathering both before during (e.g., disintegration along crystal grain boundaries). However, is difficult to measure because interface across which produced often shielded view by overlying soil. Here we overcome this limitation comparing fracture spacings measured exposed cliff faces distributions adjacent talus deposits at 15 talus–cliff pairs spanning a wide range climates lithologies California. Median spacing vary more than 10-fold correlate strongly lithology. Fracture are also closely correlated central tendency, spread, shape, b-axis diameters showing closest correspondence most sites. This suggests has not modified either or face. In addition, our sites undergone much after deposition slightly coarser sizes it contains unexploited fractures inherited bedrock. introduce new conceptual framework understanding relative importance setting mountain framework, exist spectrum defined ratio two characteristic timescales: residence time saprolite weathered required detach size. Grain size distribution effects on phosphate sorption by fluvial sediment: implications for modelling sediment- phosphate transport

A sensitivity analysis was performed on a sediment-phosphate transport model by determining the phosphate sorption characteristics of separated size fractions and prepared size distributions of fine-grained ( < 64 jum) river sediment typically transported in two southern Ontario streams. The Langmuir equation was used to quantify phosphate release from the sediment. Results of the study indicat...

Climate and topography control the size and flux of sediment produced on steep mountain slopes.

Weathering on mountain slopes converts rock to sediment that erodes into channels and thus provides streams with tools for incision into bedrock. Both the size and flux of sediment from slopes can influence channel incision, making sediment production and erosion central to the interplay of climate and tectonics in landscape evolution. Although erosion rates are commonly measured using cosmogen...

Evidence for nonlinear, diffusive sediment transport on hillslopes and implications for landscape morphology

Steep, soil-mantled hillslopes evolve through the downslope movement of soil, driven largely by slope-dependent transport processes. Most landscape evolution models represent hillslope transport by linear diffusion, in which rates of sediment transport are proportional to slope, such that equilibrium hillslopes should have constant curvature between divides and channels. On many soil-mantled hi...

A Transport Algorithm for Variable Sediment Sizes : Application to Wide Sediment Size Distributions

Total sediment transport was estimated as the summation of the transport rate of 12 sediment size fractions which were computed by an algorithm composed of three different transport relations An effective diameter for critical flow strength is used in the algorithm to account for the effect ofthe sediient mixture on the initiation of motion of each size fraction. Tests with laboratory and field...
