Secondary School Teachers’ Professional Development in Australia and Shanghai: Needs, Support, and Barriers

Using data from the Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS; 2013), this article explores teachers’ needs, support, barriers in their professional development. The research finds that Australian teachers expressed greater needs information communication technology (ICT) use new training for teaching, while Shanghai required more assistance to satisfy students’ individual learning pedagogical competencies. More than 80% of received scheduled time support participation development, whereas less 20% monetary or nonmonetary support. In terms barriers, reported two significant conflicted with development: “working schedule” “a lack incentives take part.” This reveals implications study design an effective development program ends discussing limitations future directions.
