Secondary 12?Day Planetary Wave in the Mesospheric Water Vapor During the 2016/2017 Unusual Canadian Stratospheric Warming

نویسندگان

چکیده

The anomalous strengthening of the stratospheric Aleutian High during early boreal winter 2016/2017 led to a rare Canadian warming (CSW) event, which extent wind reversal in Arctic region is strongest among CSWs since 2001. Unlike sudden warmings, polar vortex this CSW merely distorted, not displaced off pole or split into two pieces, and mean temperature only has modest increase few kelvins. Using Aura satellite Microwave Limb Sounder measurements, an exceptionally strong 12-day wave (12DW) with westward zonal wavenumber 1 captured mesospheric water vapor mixing ratio recovery phase CSW. Further diagnostic analysis suggests that baroclinic/barotropic instability related triggers 12DW stratosphere, meridional advection plays leading role modulation on vapor.

Stratospheric water vapor feedback.

We show here that stratospheric water vapor variations play an important role in the evolution of our climate. This comes from analysis of observations showing that stratospheric water vapor increases with tropospheric temperature, implying the existence of a stratospheric water vapor feedback. We estimate the strength of this feedback in a chemistry-climate model to be +0.3 W/(m(2)⋅K), which w...

Contributions of stratospheric water vapor to decadal changes in the rate of global warming.

Stratospheric water vapor concentrations decreased by about 10% after the year 2000. Here we show that this acted to slow the rate of increase in global surface temperature over 2000-2009 by about 25% compared to that which would have occurred due only to carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. More limited data suggest that stratospheric water vapor probably increased between 1980 and 2000,...

Observations of planetary waves in the mesosphere-lower thermosphere during stratospheric warming events

This study investigates the effect of stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs) on planetary wave (PW) activity in the mesosphere–lower thermosphere (MLT). PW activity near 95 km is derived from meteor wind data using a chain of eight SuperDARN radars at high northern latitudes that span longitudes from 150W to 25 E and latitudes from 51 to 66 N. Zonal wave number 1 and 2 components were extracted f...

the effect of e-64 on the developmental competence of sheep cocs during in vitro maturation

in the present study, the effect of e-64 at different concentrations (0.5, 1, 5 and 10 µm) added to (1) the ivm medium on oocyte nuclear maturation and developmental competence of ovine oocytes, and (2) to the ivc medium on embryonic development of ovine embryos were investigated.

The relationship between tropospheric wave forcing and tropical lower stratospheric water vapor

Using water vapor data from HALOE and SAGE II, an anti-correlation between planetary wave driving (here expressed by the mid-latitude eddy heat flux at 50 hPa added from both hemispheres) and tropical lower stratospheric (TLS) water vapor has been obtained. This appears to be a manifestation of the inter-annual variability of the BrewerDobson (BD) circulation strength (the driving of which is g...
