چکیده
Abstract Farming of Eucheuma denticulatum is a major activity in Zanzibar affecting seagrass ecosystems primarily through shading and trampling. The aim this study was to test the impacts trampling during seaweed farming on meadows composed by Halophila stipulacea Thalassia hemprichii their associated benthic macroalgae. Areas covered these species were selected for building farms three treatments: farm plots (with effects), effects only), control no or effects). Reduction light within recorded over 9 weeks. Percentage cover seagrasses macroalgae shoot density measured 12 weeks assess impact activities. Light significantly reduced 75 90% end growth cycle. H. , despite its capacity rapid growth, affected combination under treatment, while climax T. unaffected. Due decline increased suggesting change community dynamics. In contrast, had negative effect as an isolated disturbance, which suggests that are more resistant than would likely dominate macrophyte conditions.

Experimental Nutrient Enrichment Causes Complex Changes in Seagrass, Microalgae, and Macroalgae Community Structure in Florida Bay
We examined the spatial extent of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) limitation of each of the major benthic primary producer groups in Florida Bay (seagrass, epiphytes, macroalgae, and benthic microalgae) and characterized the shifts in primary producer community composition following nutrient enrichment. We established 24 permanent 0.25m2 study plots at each of six sites across Florida Bay and a...
متن کاملCarbon sources supporting benthic mineralization in mangrove and adjacent seagrass sediments (Gazi Bay, Kenya)
The origin of carbon substrates used by in situ sedimentary bacterial communities was investigated in an intertidal mangrove ecosystem and in adjacent seagrass beds in Gazi bay (Kenya) by δ13C analysis of bacteria-specific PLFA (phospholipid fatty acids) and bulk organic carbon. Export of mangrove-derived organic matter to the adjacent seagrasscovered bay was evident from sedimentary total orga...
متن کاملEffects of fish farming on seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) in a Mediterranean bay: seagrass decline after organic loading cessation
The effects of fish farming on a seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) meadow at Fomells Bay, Minorca (Balearic Islands) were studied. Changes in plant and meadow features (e.g. shoot morphology, shoot density, biomass, rhizome growth, nutrient and soluble sugars concentrations...) in three stations along a transect from a disturbed (organic pollution due to fish cultures) to an undisturbed site were a...
متن کاملWater Quality in the Integrated Mariculture Pond Systems (IMPS) at Makoba Bay, Zanzibar, Tanzania
The Makoba integrated mariculture pond system project (IMPS) has been on-going since 1998. Except for a period from mid 1999 to 2001, various water quality parameters, namely temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved inorganic nutrients and dissolved oxygen concentration and saturation, have been monitored continuously. In 2002, measurement of sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and consumption of oxygen b...

AIM To assess the efficacy and feasibility of implementing Helping Babies Breathe, a neonatal resuscitation programme for resource-limited environments. BACKGROUND This quality improvement project focused on training midwives on Helping Babies Breathe to address high rates of neonatal mortality secondary to birth asphyxia. METHODS The convenience sample was 33 midwives in Zanzibar, Tanzania...
